A field trip to Danang museum of Cham sculpture

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of construction of Cham Sculpture Museum in Da Nang, lecturers of Department of International Studies, University of Foreign Language Studies, The University of Da Nang (DIS) organized a field trip for students of the Advanced English course, with cooperation from officials and experts of the Museum.

Cham cultures and arts are rich in traditions and values. All participating students were attracted to the relics and items displayed beautifully within the Museum.

Here, the DIS students had valuable experience learning from the ancient artifacts, through which, they could understand more about the arts of sculpture and pottery crafted of a period of history, cultural values, worshipping practices, daily life of ancient Champa people hidden behind these works of art, e.g. Linga-Yoni, the birth Brahma

Right after the guided tour around the Museum, there was a meaningful talk between Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture officials and students. The representatives of Museum were experienced experts including Mr. Nathan Thomas Lauer, a foreign volunteer working at the Museum; Ms. Nguyen Hoang Phương Duyen, and Mr. Ly Hoa Binh, a staff of Education - Communication Department. The talk was about 3 key issues: sharing feelings upon the visit; the importance of understanding Cham culture, and giving comments, recommendations to increase museum attendance. The discussion went on with straightforward and highly constructive spirit. DIS students’ opinions helped the Museum officials have a more practical view over the perceptions of visitors to the Museum.

In addition, the Museum representatives helped students understand the importance of learning and cultural studies, especially the Cham culture to the Vietnamese youth in general and DIS students in particular.

Also, the students had spared their thoughts to further promote the image of the museum to local and foreign tourists.

After the trip, it can be said each participant has acquired something about the Cham ancient culture and practices related to the Cham people today, the uniqueness of Cham culture and ancient Champa through documents, original artifacts displayed, and the importance of introducing cultural values to international friends.
